CARRINGTON AND IT'S COMMUNITY

Our project within Carrington is based on the idea of creating a sense of identity, as well as improving the areas for the community. Participation and interaction form the heart of the project, as we aimed to create a new space for the community, designed by the community.

In order to design a successful space and to generate a sense of identity, we attended several community-based events to start a conversation about the identity of Carrington. The main event we held was a community ‘street party’ where visitors were asked in different ways to interact with our project, giving their thoughts, opinions and even designs for a community space.

With meetings taking place in various locations within the city, the project kicked off with meetings with Sneinton Alchemy and Carrington Tenants and Residents Association. We aimed to gain a brief introduction to the areas, an insight into the great work the organisations are doing and to start a dialogue focusing on how we can work together for the community in a way to help gain a sense of identity as well as improve the areas.

Street Party

On 16th July 2017, we held our ‘street party’ and invited members of the Carrington community to come along and enjoy our event. Activities included:

  • Creating a Monopoly board of Carrington, where visitors assigned emotional value to local places.

  • Visitors were also able to co-design our new community space, visualising their ideas using a model of the area which we provided.

  • Encouraging visitors to share their memories and stories.

  • A free barbecue and children’s entertainment.

Community Design

This is the design that all who came to the street party came up with. By using your recommendations and ideas, we have put together a design concept which will be up for discussion at our next public consultation.

A huge thanks to everybody that contributed in any way!
